Palworld Review: The Game Millennials Always Wanted Pokémon to Be

For decades, a massive generation of gamers who grew up with Pokémon have been begging for the franchise to evolve. They wanted a true, sprawling, open-world survival experience where creatures actually interact with the environment, where battles have real stakes, and where you can build a life alongside your monsters.

Instead of getting that from the highest-grossing media franchise on Earth, we got it from a relatively small indie studio named Pocketpair. Palworld—affectionately dubbed “Pokémon with guns”—took the gaming world by absolute storm.

But is it just a memetic flash in the pan, or is it a genuinely great game?

1. Outclassing the Corporate Giants

The most astonishing thing about Palworld isn’t just its staggering sales figures; it is what those figures represent. Palworld proves that big corporations move and develop at a snail’s pace, often resting on the laurels of their brand recognition to push out safe, iterative, and technically sluggish titles.

Pocketpair, on a comparatively low budget, managed to out-deliver the giants. They created a game that feels remarkably ambitious. It sends a loud and clear message to the industry: players do not care about perfectly polished corporate roadmaps. They care about pure fun. And Palworld is overflowing with it.

2. Unfiltered, Chaotic Fun

At its core, the whole point of Palworld is just to let you have fun without restrictive hand-holding. The mechanisms are a wild, brilliant mashup of Ark: Survival Evolved, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and creature-collection games.

You can ride a giant wolf across the plains, use an electric hedgehog as a makeshift stun grenade, or literally give a monkey an assault rifle. It is absurd, hilarious, and deeply engaging. But beneath the memes of arming cute animals with heavy artillery lies a surprisingly robust gameplay loop.

Catching Pals isn’t just about filling out a static encyclopedia. Every Pal you catch has a specific set of skills (like mining, planting, or kindling) that you can utilize.

3. Base Building and Creativity

The survival and base-building mechanics are where the game truly hooks you. You aren’t just building a static wooden box to hide from the rain; you are building a fully automated industrial complex managed by your Pals.

Assigning a water-type Pal to irrigate your berry farm while a fire-type Pal smelts ore in the furnace creates a deeply satisfying logistical loop. The base building lets you exercise your creativity, designing sprawling, multi-tiered fortresses. Watching your Pals happily (or exhaustedly) scurrying around your base, contributing to your survival, creates a weirdly strong bond with your digital workforce.

4. Tactical Boss Fights and Multiplayer

While the open-world exploration is relaxing, the boss fights scattered around the map and inside the syndicate towers demand respect.

These encounters take genuine preparation and tactics. You cannot simply over-level a single starter creature and mash one button to win. You need to dodge attacks in real-time using your player character, manage your weapon durability, craft the right elemental ammunition, and strategically swap out your Pals to counter the boss’s weaknesses.

Furthermore, multiplayer multiplies the fun exponentially. Exploring the map, building a communal super-base, or coordinating a chaotic boss raid with friends turns a great game into an unforgettable, laugh-out-loud experience.

5. Final Verdict

Palworld is rough around the edges. It has bugs, wonky pathfinding, and early-access jank. But none of that matters because the core game is so relentlessly entertaining.

It is an amazing game that proves what happens when developers prioritize player freedom and fun over corporate mandates. Simply put, Palworld is exactly what Pokémon could have—and should have—been.
